Travel Guide to Sahastradhara in Dehradun
I hang out in Dehradun most of the times because I LOVE this city. I love the food, the environment, the culture and everything else in between. BUT, every once in a while- I need a change and SAHASTRADHARA was this time's saviour. I visited the Waterfall, stream, temple, ropeway within a day! It is situated towards the direction of Mussorie. Pretty soon I'll be visiting again with my boyfriend, Sourab! He loves travelling and I love him.
How to Reach:
You can reach Sahastradhara via the following ways.
Nearest airport- Take a flight from your home to Jolly Grant Airport. You can either take a bus/cab from there till Parade Ground where you will have to catch another bus till Sahastradhara.
Nearest railway station- Dehradun Railway Station is the closest to Sahastradhara. From the railway station, take the shared auto till Parade Ground from where you will have to catch another bus till Sahastradhara.
Via bus- If you stay or are staying in Dehradun, head to Parade ground. A bus leaves from here frequently. Ticket is priced just at INR 25/- The ride from Dehradun on Sahastradhara is also quite fun.
Best time to visit Sahastradhara:
Although you can go there all year round, I recommend going in the summer season when everything is in operation, like the water park.
Where to stay:
There are hotels and guest houses all over the place, but I recommend staying in D.K. Himalayan Guest
house, which is located right by the stream. Prices range from INR 500 to 900.
Things to do:
Visit the Shiv temple and Droanacharya Gufa- Sahastradhara has a small Shiv maunder complex but is unique for harbouring the Gufa. According to the history, Droanacharya meditated in the said caves, hence the name.
Sahastradhara Ropeway- For INR 150 per person (entry fees) you can take a 5 minute ropeway ride to a small amusement park. Unfortunately, the park isn ’t functional and is only maintained for beautification purposes. Timings- 9 AM to 6 PM.
Waterpark- Functional during the summer season, Sahastradhara has a small water park and a few rides.
Swim in the stream- Sahastradhara (meaning the thousand fold spring) has small manmade pools in the stream. You can swim here, relax by the river and do nothing!
Visit the Sahastradhara waterfall- Although it is not a huge waterfall, the stream is also flooded with water from a small waterfall, by the temple.
Places to eat at:
I only tried food at two eating joints since I only stayed for a night-
Bhawani Restuarant and Hotel- For an affordable, fresh and tasty Indian food, head to Bhawani’s. It is run by a local family who have been staying in Sahastradhara for over a decade!
The eating joint at Ropeway Park- If you’re craving south dosa, you can have a plate just for 110/- INR at the ropeway restaurant.
Places to visit around Sahastradhara:
Mussourie
Dhanaulti
Clement town
PS. Don’t confuse this with Badrinath’s Sahastradhara or Sahastradhara Maheshwar! HEHE..
